Why Natural Deodorant Gives Some People a Rash (And What to Do About It)

If you have ever switched to a natural deodorant, gone fine for a week or two, and then woken up with underarms that are red, bumpy, itchy, or stinging when you shave, you are in very good company. It is one of the most common reasons people give up and go back.
And the frustrating part is that most people blame the wrong thing. They decide their body "can't do natural," or that they are one of the unlucky ones. Usually neither is true. Usually it is one specific ingredient.
The short answer: it is probably the baking soda
Baking soda works in deodorant. That is why it is in so many of them. It neutralizes the odor-causing byproducts that bacteria leave behind on your skin, and it does it cheaply and reliably.
The problem is pH.
Healthy skin sits slightly acidic, somewhere around 4.7 to 5.5. That mild acidity is not an accident. It is part of how your skin holds its barrier together and keeps the right bacteria happy. Baking soda is alkaline, around 9 on the same scale.
Rub something that alkaline into thin skin, twice a day, under an arm that is warm and covered and gets shaved regularly, and for a lot of people the barrier eventually gives. What you get is irritation: redness, small bumps, itching, sometimes a burning feeling when deodorant goes on freshly shaved skin.
This is not an allergy in most cases. It is closer to a chemical burn happening very slowly.
Why it shows up two weeks in and not on day one
This is the part that throws people off, and it is why the "detox" story caught on.
You will see it everywhere: your armpits are "detoxing" from aluminum, push through it, the rash means it is working. That is not what is happening. Your underarms are not an organ of detoxification, and there is nothing being purged.
What is actually happening is cumulative. The first few applications, your skin barrier absorbs the hit. It recovers overnight. But if you are applying twice a day, the recovery never quite catches up to the damage, and somewhere between day five and day twenty you cross a line and it becomes visible all at once.
So the timing feels mysterious, but it is just arithmetic.
Why some people never react at all
Two people can use the exact same baking soda deodorant and have completely different experiences, which is why the internet is so split on this.
A few things move the needle:
- How much baking soda is in it. Formulas vary a lot. Some are heavy on it, some use a little alongside other odor absorbers.
- How often you shave. Shaving takes off the top layer of skin. Applying an alkaline product to skin that has just been exfoliated is a much bigger ask than applying it to skin that has not.
- Your baseline skin. If you already run sensitive, eczema-prone, or reactive, you have less buffer to spend.
- How hot it is. More sweat means the baking soda stays dissolved and in contact with your skin longer.
None of that makes you fragile. It just means the margin is thinner for some people than others.
What to look for instead
The good news is that baking soda is not the only thing that handles odor. If you are reacting, you do not have to give up and go back. You have to read the label differently.
Look for these on the ingredient list:
- Magnesium hydroxide. Also alkaline, but much less so, and far better tolerated by most people who react to baking soda. It is the most common swap.
- Zinc ricinoleate. Works by trapping odor molecules rather than changing pH at all.
- Arrowroot powder, kaolin clay, tapioca starch. These absorb moisture rather than fighting odor directly, and they are gentle.
And watch these two:
- Baking soda listed high on the label. Ingredients are listed roughly in order of amount, so position matters.
- Heavy fragrance or a big essential oil load. Baking soda is the usual suspect, but it is not the only one. If a product is baking soda free and you are still reacting, scent is the next thing to look at. An unscented version is the cleanest way to test.
If your underarms are already irritated
Stop using the product. Not "push through," not "switch to every other day." Stop.
Give it a few days and let the skin settle. Keep it simple while it does: a gentle unscented soap, and something plain and moisturizing if it feels tight or raw. Skip shaving that area until it looks normal again.
When you go back in, start with a baking soda free formula, use it once a day rather than twice for the first week, and do not apply it straight after shaving. Give it a couple of hours.
If the irritation is severe, spreading, weeping, or not settling down after a week away from the product, that is worth having an actual doctor look at rather than troubleshooting from a blog post.
One honest thing about natural deodorant
It is deodorant. It is not antiperspirant.
Aluminum salts work by temporarily blocking sweat ducts, and nothing in a natural formula does that. So if what you actually want is to stop sweating, no natural deodorant is going to give you that, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
What a good one does is handle the smell. Sweat itself is close to odorless. The smell comes from bacteria breaking it down, and that is the part you can address.
Worth knowing before you switch, so you are judging it on what it can actually do.
