What’s NOT in Our Products — and Why That Matters
Share
At Hemsworth Homestead, we’re just as mindful about what we leave out of our formulas as we are about what we put in. Our products are made with real, recognizable ingredients that are gentle, effective, and safe for the whole family. Here's a look at what you won’t find in our products—and why that matters for your skin and your health.
✘ “Natural” Fragrance
Why we avoid it:
Many products claim to be scented with "natural fragrance," but this term is often unregulated and vague. It can still contain dozens of undisclosed components, including allergens or synthetic ingredients. We use only pure essential oils, so you always know exactly what’s in your product—and what’s not.
✘ Parabens
Why we avoid them:
These preservatives are linked to hormone disruption and have been found in breast tissue in some studies. We skip parabens entirely and use alternatives that are safer and better tolerated by sensitive skin.
✘ Phthalates
Why we avoid them:
Often hidden in synthetic fragrances, phthalates can interfere with the endocrine system and have been associated with reproductive and developmental issues. We don’t use them—period.
✘ Phenoxyethanol
Why we’re phasing it out:
While commonly used as a preservative in "clean" beauty, recent concerns about skin irritation—especially in those with sensitivities—led us to reformulate. We’re moving toward gentler alternatives that are still effective and safe.
✘ Silicones
Why we avoid them:
Silicones can create a temporary silky feel, but they form a barrier on the skin that may trap bacteria and prevent it from breathing. We’d rather nourish your skin for real, not coat it with something synthetic.
✘ Fake “Natural” Preservatives
Why we avoid them:
Preservatives like radish root ferment filtrate sound great on labels, but studies show they don’t actually prevent microbial growth effectively. We use proven, broad-spectrum preservatives that are both safe and functional—because mold and bacteria have no place in skincare.
✘ SLS/SLES (Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate)
Why we avoid them:
These harsh detergents can strip skin of its natural oils and lead to dryness or irritation. We choose gentle, natural surfactants that cleanse without disrupting your skin’s protective barrier.
✘ Synthetic Emulsifiers
Why we’re moving away from them:
Some older formulas may still include synthetic emulsifiers, but we’re transitioning to natural, plant-based alternatives that are kinder to skin and more in line with our values.
✘ Polysorbates
Why we’re phasing them out:
Used to blend oil and water, polysorbates are petroleum-derived and can contain trace impurities. While considered low-risk, we’ve begun replacing them with natural emulsifiers in newer formulations.
Other Ingredients We Avoid:
✘ Artificial Colors
We rely on natural botanicals and clays for color—no synthetic dyes or micas, ever.
✘ Petrochemicals
No mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or other fossil fuel-derived ingredients. We believe in nourishing oils from the earth—not the lab.
✘ Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
Even in tiny amounts, these are linked to skin sensitivities and long-term health concerns. Not welcome here.
In Short?
We believe less is more—less confusion, more clarity. Every ingredient we choose is there for a reason. No fluff, no fillers, and no hidden chemicals. Just simple, real skincare you can feel good about using.
